My internet speed has been particularly slow in the last couple of weeks (it ranges from 0.8MB to 2.5MB) and I am wondering if increasing my package from >4MB to >8MB would make any difference or is there an upper limit on what your phone line can deal with? I don't have fibre optic cables where Iive.
Cheers.

increasing the speed of your package would make no difference, your problem lies with the phone cabling itself or the distance you are from the phone exchange.
you can try things such as making sure you dont have excess phone cabling anywhere in your house and also make sure all phone lines have filters on this and its also worth unplugging and plugging back in anything on the phone line - router - phones - wall sockets etc jut in case any have a poor connection
In theory there is a limit to your maximum speed, but it depends on many factors! ADSL which is the system most of us access to get Broadband via our phones has physical limitations due to the use of copper wiring used in part of the circuit! A synchronous version can be available, but the expense is not worth it! Basically, the further you are from your digital exchange, the slower your connection will be! If you are within a mile or so, then in theory speeds of over 40MB could be possible, although your ISP usually limits what you can actually get! That's not the end of the story though! The more people that are using the same circuit as you, the less bandwidth each user has access to! Other factors such as noise on the line, the quality of your ADSL Router, and whether you use Wireless or cable connections will affect your speed! Good Luck! `
Google...thinkbroadband.com....run a speed test, will tell you what d/l speed you are getting
It all depends on the connections you have in house, and the distance from telephone exchange....not a lot you can do about it, irrespective what d/l speed ISP promises you
Maximum speed will depend on your distance from the exchange.
