When I feel that way, I journal. I write about the things that do make me happy and why, what makes me unhappy and ideas how I can improve those things/situations. I don't look at what's "missing". If you look at all that you're missing, you aren't paying attention to what you have.
You could be experiencing depression. I think trying to fill that void with something else often gets people into trouble. People use things like alcohol, drugs, sex and even religion. You should seek some professional help - see a councilor at school or a therapist.
Yes quite often I feel like that, particularly when my gf is away for long periods of time. I tend to focus on something positive, to improve my quality of life. This can be keeping fit, doing courses to improve my employability, something that keeps me focused in the long run helps improve my life in general. Also, ensure that you have a balanced social life. Sometimes we all need to be on our own, but I'm a big believer in spending time with others, as this can be relaxing, fun, and a distraction from any worries you have. Hope this helps.
Exercise, drugs, food, drink, OCD, get yourself pregnant and then spend the rest of your life wondering when I am going to invent Cool Furniture and The Thermos Bed.
its not depression, you are obviously not doing what you really want to do in life, this could be in a job or generally social life, or anything, try look hard at what you really want, then drop the lot and go for it! good luck!

For me, I think it is having more meaningful relationships in my life. Best Wishes
