We have a really huge yard and have lots of acres of land. We have two dogs and he just lets them run all around the yard. He'll be at work and I'll come home and they'll be running around the yard. We don't have a fenced in yard. I told him to keep them in the house when everyone is gone but he's like, "they're fine, stop worrying about them." Should I just listen to him or what?

Acreage or not, if your dogs left your property and caused any damage on a neighbor's property, you would be liable for that.
There are many simple solutions such as putting up a simple fence or installing an underground fence. Not only will this help keep them safe, it will prevent any accidents or misunderstandings.
No matter how friendly your dogs may be, any dog can bite a person if scared or hurt, or can chase or harm livestock. Loose dogs are one of the top predators of chickens, for example.
add: Like RydeOn mentioned--we have about 1/2 acre fenced in and attached to the garage. We added a 'doggie door' to the side of the garage so they can go in and out as they please, where they have doghouses and food and water available (heated bowls and heating pads for the winter--these dogs are so spoiled!) It doesn't cost much to put up some type of a fence. Much better than chaining them up or keeping them in the house. We are gone most of the day, and I would not want them stuck indoors where they can't get out and play or go to the bathroom. Leaving dogs to run loose is pretty common where we live, but I refuse to do it. Way too risky for the dogs and I can tell you as a neighbor it angers me when other dogs poop all over our property and drop ticks and annoy our dogs and bark all night.
tying them or locking them up is cruel . Why not fence off the yard ( or at least a portion of it ) so they can be outside , enjoy the yard and not get into trouble ?
Most normal people with acreage will finish and fence like a 1/4 acre or so .
I had my dogs the yard was fencened the idiots next door let her dogs out they were biting and fighting to get near my dogs I looked down the one of her dogs were down ,on a pile of rubble I called the neighbor to bring in her dogs one of our dogs was inbetween the fence I was trying to get him her boyfriend finally came out after me yelling our dog went over the fence do you know he got the blame for the dog being in her yard she blamed my dog ,The boyfriend knew this and he is no longer living there because he knows what really happened.well the dog had no shots $$211.00 the dog had to be boarded $400. and we got the vet bill which was inflated $2633'.00 thats for the vet for 12 hours the dog died. Iam being cyber bullied by the neighbors .So if I were you make sure they are leashed and if they are big dogs make it a high fence.I didnot know the dog could go over the fence either. And if they bite someone its even worst.Even though these bullies let their dogs roam the street at night .
Some people think that it is fine to leave dogs to run loose. But it is never safe to leave a dog running loose unattended. There is always a chance that they will get run over by a car or get into some other kind of trouble. Dogs should always be confined by a fence or in a house when they are unattended.
I live in the country on plenty of acreage - what good is a dog tied up when the bears come around, or another critter coming around to harass our cattle & horses??? Surely my dog tied up won't keep the creepers away either - some flatlander comes cruising by wants to break into the place - oh look, dogs locked up, lets jack their tractor, generator, quad....
It's not safe but I doubt you will change his opinion about that. My husband is similar...but has recently changed his mind after our last dog was struck and killed by a car and we were sued for the damages...and lost as we were not being responsible dog owners.
Now he keeps the (new) dog supervised at all times or on the lead...
If you live in the country on "lots of acres" , why would you tie them up or put them on a leash? Seems stupid to me.
He should either put up a fence, or bring them in when you are not home. Whatever he does, do NOT tie them up or chain them. It is inhumane and will cause aggression or destructive behaviors.
Are the dogs trained to understand boundaries? If so, this isn't a problem. If not, he needs to leash them until they are properly trained.
That is dangerous for your animals, they could get in to something like a racoon with rabies, or even worse someone like me who does not like animals, for their safety he should have them tethered when no one is there.
