I have at least one of each manufacturer. I like my Kimber best, but would not discourage you from a Springfield or Colt. My Kimber is Custom Shop commander sized 1911, and retails for 2 grand +. The 1911 game ain't necessarily cheap.
I was wondering the same thing when I was looking for a 1911 and I ended up going with the Kimber Custom II and couldn' be happier.
Colt is great, but overpriced, and Springfield is good, but made in Brazil (SOME SA frames are made in the US, but parts and assembly is in Brazil). Kimber is one of the best manufacturers and they are 100% made in the USA. The fittings are tight and the action is smooth as butter.
price wise, it comes down to either kimber or springfield. Colt is overly expensive and your paying mostly for a name. Depending on how much you plan on spending, you can get a good deal on a kimber Pro series for about 800 or so. Springfield has very nice variations too starting from 550. In the end, it comes down to spending money for other features and details.
I put lot of rounds through all of them and ended up buying the Kimber, and liked it so much I bought another one. Any way you go with those 3 you can't go wrong.

They are very well made, but I liked Kimber enough to buy one.

Springfield is better priced.
