I have an HDTV with a USB port on the backside and a Time Warner (or Comcast, don't know which) with a USB port on the front of it too. So if i were to put video files on a usb drive, would i be able to watch them on my hdtv by plugging the usb stick into either my hdtv or my cable box? if so, which format would the videos have to be in?
I know that cable companies use the usb port to install software upsates, but couldnt that port also be used for other media?

Depending on your TV, yes. The cable box uses the USB port for firmware updates.
No the USB port on your cable box will not work. Yes it is used to update firmware, but as for the customer, it is essentially a non-active port. It merely provides power. So you could use it to charge an ipod or other devices, but you cannot transfer information onto it from a flash drive. The USB port on your tv on the other hand, is good. I would assume that the format would have to be MP4 files, similar to those you would put on a video mp3 player.
