Religion WAS the way of life for the "viking". The Norse Heathens lived, worshiped, ate, slept and treated others by the way that they were taught as part of their lives. Religion wasn't a separate thing to them. If something wasn't in accordance with their beliefs, they didn't incorporate it into their lives.
There are many rules and ways of looking at the world. One of the best places to start looking is to read "the Havamala", or "The saying of Har".
