If I eliminate the desktop, how will the signal (or whatever is coming from Comcast) get to the laptop? I know it's called a router-does the router connect to the cable, then just sit there sending and receiving signals through the air? (I know, very childish descriptions)

The Comcast box that I have doesn't provide WiFi. I had to get a wireless router to connect to it. I think Comcast will rent one to you, but I prefer to own mine. I'm already sending them too much money. Assuming your laptop has built-in WiFi, it should just be a matter of selecting the wireless network and typing in the right password.
You can use wireless from your wireless router if you have one, otherwise, use the same network cable as you id before, everything should just work, no big drama here.
