I have an 8 week old Dachsund puppy. I did some research and there is on ongoing theme about how hard-headed they are, but this is ridiculous. I've had her almost two weeks, and no progress. She just "goes" whereever she wants. I haven't crated her, because I am home all the time. We go outside on the leash, she waits til we get inside to do her thing. I've tried the training pads, too. I'm a former Dachsund owner & you are so right about them being hard headed. Try this for potty training. It will work in time just be patient & do not give up. Your dog will catch on sooner or later. Here's what to try:

When you think that it's time for your dog to go outside, put her on a leash & spend an adequate amount of time outside with your dog. If she doesn't go, then immediately, put her in her crate. She'll know that that's where she goes when she didn't go to the bathroom when she was outside or when she leaves a mess or puddle inside. Put a "training pad" in the bottom of the crate. Dogs will not go to the bathroom in the crate, especially if she sleeps in it at night.

When you feel it's time for your dog needs to go out again, take her out of the crate, carry her outside, put the leash on her, & take her out into the yard. If she goes to the bathroom, then praise her, & go inside & give her a dog treat. She'll soon learn that when she goes to the bathroom outside, she'll get praise & a treat.

My son just got a three month old dog & this is the house breaking routine he & his family have used when training their dog. She's doing really well & even goes to the door now when she has to go out.

Please give it a try & be patient. Crating her when she doesn't go to the bathroom outside is not cruel. She's a very smart breed of dog & will be housebroken before long.

1. she is 8 weeks old, does that mean she was 6 weeks when you got her? that is too young.

#2, she is 8 weeks old. You wouldn't expect a 6 month old baby to be potty trained would you?

#3. Crate training is a great tool, if you wish to research it.

#4. It's actually good that she doesn't recognize "puppy pads". IN my opinion all they do it tell a puppy its ok to pee in the house.

The trick to potty training is patience and consistency. An 8 week old pup will need ot go out every 2 hours or so. This means it is your responsibility to give her the opportunity to go out OFTEN, especially when she wakes, after she eats, after she plays, before bed, etc. Always make it a positive experience. You may need to stand and wait outside 20-30 for her to go, but she WILL go. When she does, reward her with praise and treats. Never correct her when you find a mess- dogs have no concept of time. If you catch her in the act however, a firm "NO! Potty OUTside" and pick her up quickly and take her out to finish.

Remember that a dog can only "hold it" for as many hours as the dog's age is in months. This means by 6 months, she can hold it 6 hours, or through the night. Potty training a dog is the most frustrating aspect of owning a dog. But with patience, understanding and consistency, you will reap the rewards.

Crate that puppy! I have always believed that dog WILL NOT soil there "living space". A friend of mine has house-broken several of the dachsund puppies so it can be done. YOU have to be th eone in control. You owe it to yourself & her to put the time , energy & love into her training.

dude, a dogs bladder doesn't stop growing until it's around 6 months.

DO NOT give the puppy into trouble when she messes indoors - she will see it as attention and any attention is good from her point of view.

If you catch her in the act, IMMEDIATELY lift her and take her to where you want her to toilet and praise her when she does the toilet there.

also, remember to toilet her as soon as she wakes up, after meals and at least every hour/hour and a half during the day.

If you need more advice, talk to your vet, but remember, the puppy is still very young - she will learn that going outside is good where as inside is boring!

It takes time and effort, but if you love her, you'll make the effort!!!

I have a dachsund too. She pees everywhere she wants. I have had her for a year and she never has learned.

Be supportive to her and don't smack her if she has an accident. be patient or try to get a trainer to work with her, or even by a book! another thing, I saw this thing in a magazine that looks like a piece of turf but it is a washable potty rug thing that somehow attracts dogs to it and makes them want to do their business on it.
