Hi! I have a comet goldfish that is about the size of my pinkie finger. He's currently living in a 10 gallon tank with a filter (I'm planning on upgrading when he gets a bit larger) and I noticed that a few of his scales aren't shiny (approximately 4 or 5). They're not fuzzy, and I only notice them when the light shines on him. Behaviorally, he's very active and appears happy, and he shows no other symptoms than those discolored scales. I was wondering if these scales are a sign of some sort of bacterial infection? This may or may not impact his scales, but I've been treating him for ich for the past 4 days with half doses of medication, and the white spots are all gone (I'll still treat him for another week or so, just to make sure that it doesn't return).

Hi!
I also have a comet who is about the size of my pinkie who has less shiny scales and it is completely normal. It is most likely not a bacterial infection and it is just the way your little guy is, although there is a good chance that he may have been injured or hurt before you got him. Over time, they should heal but for the mean time make sure he is always healthy and has no problems.
Good luck!
:)
Those are probably missing scales due to some injury (quite possibly from before you got the fish). Lost scales usually grow back, but sometimes they don't.
