No. Any sub, no matter what it is, is a low-frequency device. Low frequencies penetrate objects far better then mid or high frequencies, so generally speaking, the grill will have no effect whatsoever on the performance of the bass in a given sound system. My sub is actually boxed in against the wall of the room, and the bass is just as good as if it were fully in the open.

I have found (over the years) that some metal grills will
(eventually) vibrate making the bass sound raspy/like
crap. These grills are used to protect the speaker's
cone from any (possible) damage. I would tightly secure
it or remove it depending on where it sits in the room.
Removing the grill (in your case) would be a good idea.
As long as it cannot be harmed by anything; I would
remove the grill. Don't throw the grill away; but have
it set aside (with all of it's hardware) so if you decide
to sell it (at some point) you can put it back on.
Happy Holidays!
