What makes you rate a horror film as good?
Is it the gore? The story? The ending? The actors and actresses? The monsters or villains? Or perhaps just the suspense of who will die next and how?
Just curious what others think as it seems we don't really have any good horror flicks anymore. =/
Thanks in advance!

I think it would be the characters and actors/actresses. Also the story. It has to be interesting, it can't just be the same old horror story that we seen millions of times. Yes I love blood. I hate guts though lol.
I also hate when the killers don't talk. I mean I love Michael Myers and Jason is okay but they are not as great as Freddy. Freddy is such a cocky little b.a.s.t.a.r.d. He is so cruel and disgusting. A pervert lmfao. Not a coward at all. Robert did a great job playing him. The best. I think that they may ruin the Freddy movies when they remake the movie. grr.
Its not just what I said though I think one of the most important things to make a horror movie good would be the sounds. You can't have a good horror movie without scary sounds. even if the movie is so horrible and boring if they use scary sounds at least its better.
Sometimes they don't have any creepy little sounds in movies and the movies are okay. They'd be 100 times better if they had those spooky sounds lol.
Also like I said above there are so many of the same type of movies. You always see certain things in a movie. The dumb girl who is always half naked lol runs up the stairs instead of OUT OF THE HOUSE like she should. Also another thing that is always there is the girl always trips and falls. ha ha. Or they never have a weapon. The killer always comes back lol.... Ever notice any of that? OH and another thing the car never starts when they have to leave or their cell phone won't work lol. They should do other things and not always the same thing.
another important thing is they have to let us see the murders. They can't just expect us to hear a bloody scream and see blood on the floor to have us love the movie. I want to see them get tortured and killed.
as for what you said about that there are not any good horror flicks anymore. Your kinda right but I love the saw movies. Also the remake of Halloween 1 was alright. Didn't see two. Um the new Jason was alright.....And the haunting in Connecticut was good. Its about a family that moves into an old house that they find out was a funeral home. Also the movie the autopsy..that was honestly a corny movie lmfao but they had some good killings!!but ya I wish we had more horror movies out there!
That's mostly it besides for the movie being long. I hate short movies. Especially if the movie is kick a.s.s and has all of the things that I said....it would be better long or a series!
I rambled sorry. I just loved this question a lot and I had fun answering it.
Well it's not the gore, and it's not the suspense of who will die next and how. The gore is not scary; it's just...bloody. And if it's just a case of who will die next, that's not scary in itself unless you care about the characters, which does mean that the actors and actresses play a strong part in whether the movie is good or not. Because good actors can make us care about them-bad actors can't.
So having said that the story is the most important part of the suspense. If the story sucks then the good actors won't help. The direction is very important because it can help a weak story and not so good acting.
These are the most successful horror-supernatural films.

Personally I liked "The Ring" and "Thirteen Ghosts" and "Poltergeist". I suppose what they have in common is children being attacked and being saved by their parents. It's a basic human instinct to protect your family, and makes for a good story.

What makes a horror film great? Easy.
IT SCARES THE F*CKEN SH*T OUT OF YOU.
Whether they give you an adreniline rush or not. Some don't. Those are the sucky ones...
If it's not a remake, a sequel, or pg-13.
mostly the suspense and the monster or whatever that appears out of nowhere....... BOO!!!
