"They say" that when one is crazy (mentally ill if one prefers) the insane do not know they are insane, but what if one recognizes they are a bit touched, a tad barking mad or at least have crazy tenancies? Is the person that finds themselves a bit "special" still considered insane?
Is there a level in which one is considered insane? Don't we all have some crazy tendencies?
Please don't go taking this question too seriously, it's nothing personal and directed at philosophy not medically. I'm talking about every day people here. How do we know we are not all insane? OR have finally gone co co for coco pops?
(This is what I get for listening to a movie like Shutter Island as I fall to sleep).
Update:EDIT: I'm not referring to "criminally insane" either. Just those that seem a bit off, have corks and can actually be found interesting due to these tendencies.
Cheers

Most interesting people are a little odd.
Sometimes oddness goes over the edge and they become disfunctional in their life. That can be a sign of a nervous breakdown (which can pass with help or with time) or a collapse into full psychosis (which can often, nowadays, also be treated thanks to improved psych meds.) There is a huge range of problems/behaviors in there.
I find people who are completely stable, pleasant and wholly sane a little boring. (Comfortable, though. It's nice to know what to expect.) That said, few-- if any-- people are completely stable when they are going through some personal crisis.
If you are going through something that makes you feel like you are losing it, that's upsetting but it's good. You notice it. You recognize that you have a problem, and, with that knowledge, you can get the help you need to get through it. Perhaps you can get through it just by talking to people who care about you, or perhaps you need professional help at some level. If you are aware that you have a problem, you can move on to dealing with it. Nearly everyone goes through some rough patches psychologically. Be determined to help yourself; if you can maintain that much of a grip, you should be OK.
Most really insane people lack awareness that their reality is very different from that of others. They are living in a different world, and they usually cannot connect with the real world. They believe in their perceptions but their perceptions are untrue, and they typically become very frustrated and angry with those who point this out. They lack, often, any awareness that the problem is in them. It must be awful. And scary. And, well, maddening.
So far as i can tell, insanity always involves excess focus on a particular idea or small set of idea. If you haven't got that, you're not insane. However, you may still be psychotic: for instance, you may have lost your memory or be unable to think clearly due to organic damage to your brain. That isn't what most people mean by insanity.
not one of the above, quite. i can't say mad...yet indignant could be one i ought to bypass alongside with. So the question could replace into, what am I indignant approximately. answer: i could be maximum indignant approximately being so naive that i presumed human beings lots whilst i became growing to be up...right as much as this very 2nd. I ought to have been so lots greater conscious and prepared to question the why's and wherefore's than to settle for what became given to me as 'gospel' (no longer meant to be non secular)... i think of i'm getting over it, yet slowly...
In 62 years I have never met anyone who didn't act a little crazy at times of stress or uncertainty.
t seems to be the human condition.
Love and blessings don
There is such a thing as functionally insane, and it's better to be self aware and aware of your insanity than to be totally unaware. You can't fix anything about yourself that you aren't aware of---that is if you're inclined to "fix" it.
