My last child is being born soon and I need to go back to work. I have not worked in a long while and need some direction on where I can start and what fields I can go into so I can support my family without having to rely on my husband to support me. He is older and if something happens to him I have to be able to support myself and my family? Has anyone that has been in my situation be able to give me some good advice in this matter?

Contact your state's "Department of Employment/Unemployment" depending on the state it will go by one or the other.
I live in Oregon and our tax dollars here pay for a special program that the state will pick up about half of your salary the first 2 or three months. Employers like that as they can then justify training people like you that have been out of the workforce for a while. There is a good chance there is a similar program in your state.
You can also check out a temp service. Dress really nice and show good energy. Chances are if you can type, are well spoken and radiate a positive attitude they will hire you for themselves (if they are looking) and not bother sending you out to their clients. Temp services are a great way to get passive training as you are just filling in most of the time. The more reliable you are, the more likely they are to send you out to a long term "temp to regular" assignment.
Also, once you get a job find out if you can qualify for food stamps. You probably won't make enough money initially to cover the bills. But again, our tax dollars go to great programs that are set up to help you along, depending on the city you live in you may benefit really nicely.
Good luck!

We are in the same boat. I had our baby a year ago and I am eager to get back to work also. What my husband suggested I do is see a career counselor to help me with interviews and reumes etc. You could also go back to school part time and earn a degree while you work which what I am going to do.Whatever you do make sure you are happy doing it.GOOD LUCK
