It is probably not neccesary now. David West and Pau Gasol are pretty much the same age and value to their teams right now so it wouldn't be extremely needed. The Lakers should not trade either Odom or Gasol until Bynum proves himself or they will be in trouble. Plus doing the deal will crowd up the frontcourt for L.A. (they will have Mihm, Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Ariza, and Butler at the center/power forward positions). On the other hand, the Hornets lose some valuable defense for a weak post defender in Gasol. (Also, Gasol has learned to play center in L.A. so he and Chandelor would have a hard time adjusting to playing along side each other).
Are you kidding me. That would be a horrible trade for the Hornets. Butler is not just a throw in, who'll sit on the bench all of the time. And West although not as good from the outside as Gasol, is much much stronger. If it was a straight up trade i'd say maybe, but when you throw in Butler it's pretty one sided.

Instead you should replace Pau Gasol with Lamar Odom and add Sasha Vujucic. Then You would have West start and play small foward
David West and Lamar Odom are too much alike in size and how they play, they couldn't both be on the same team
That trade will never happen.
