Also what are the most popular genres to write for right now? Is it worth putting in the time for the return. I have all sorts of material to write from I was wondering what would have the greatest chances to get published first?

Vivianna, no legitimate publisher takes unsolicited manuscripts. You send them a manuscript they didn't ask for, and it goes straight in the trash.
Plenty (but not all) take unsolicited query letters *about* manuscripts. The rest don't want to hear from authors at all, only literary agents.
Many genres are thriving. Fantasy may be past its recent peak, and traditional mystery stands at a relative low point, although the best in every genre will still find a home. Female protagonist cozy mysteries still sell briskly, as do paranormal mysteries.
Almost no publishing companies (or agents) will look at unsolicited manuscripts. See if you can find a local writers' group, where the members can share marketing information. Can't find a group? Take the initiative and get one started. Usually libraries offer free meeting space.
Never appropriate is the attitude to take when writing anything.
Passion should be your guiding force. If you're passionate about something or someone, write about that. That's a best indicator for success in writing. People will decide is YOU are acceptable to them. Once YOU are accepted, you can pretty much write ANYTHING. Until then, just WRITE, WRITE and keep WRITING.
Good luck.
