I can't find the information on TSA's website. Are tripods allowed in carryon luggage? Has anyone travelled with one, and did they say anything about it?
I carried mine as carry on from Omaha to Denver and then Denver to Las Vegas. On the Denver to Las Vegas leg they pulled me aside and made me open the bag, but gave me no grief once they saw what it was. Mine is a side pistol grip too. I had the head off the legs to make it fit in my bag and I think it was the head that got them excited on the xray.
I checked it for every other leg of that holiday (8 flights in total) and twice I had cards in my bag saying the TSA had looked through it.
Funnily enough when I returned to Australia at Sydney, they never even xrayed my carry bags!
If it is not to big you can carry it on and the stewardess will take it and place it in the front with them and treat it like an umbrella, baby stroller etc. But you may want to contact the airline.
i didn't used to mind flying, but anymore i really hate it, i'll drive two days rather than fly... that way no one has to be "vigilant" about my camera and tripod, and monopod, and all the rest of my enigmatic and eccentric gear that i, as an ARTISTE, am entitled to carry.

I'd be calling ahead to find out. I can see how a tripod could be used as a weapon or to disguise a weapon, so it may be iffy.
Better sure than sorry, I'd be getting it from the horses mouth.

Hope this helps,

if you have those liquid levels on your tripod, they will confiscate it. Unless you can get it to fit inside a zip loc baggie.
J/K I'm really not sure about that, but it's worth to ask.
I have never carried it in carry on luggage, but I would imagine it would be all right as long as it can be run through the security scanners.
They did stop it out of the UK, even for short ones at one point. I had one on my camera bag. Could be used as a wepon maybe
call the airline and ask

Yes, my brother took one on and though I think his bag was searched they did not say anything. As long as it fits in the bag it's okay.
As long as it fits within the size limitations.
