All I did was change the lens and put my camera on a tripod to get an awesome picture of a shell-pink moon against a deep blue sky. But I was only able to get one picture, then a [CHR] error popped up. I turned the power off and on again and got one more picture, but I got the [CHR] error again. I tried viewing the pics on my camera and got a message that the card could not be used, but I was able to load all but the two moon pictures onto my computer. I never removed the card between the pictures from yesterday, that downloaded just fine, and tonight. My user's manual said the [CHR] error might mean dirty contacts in the card, but it worked fine when I put it back into my camera. All the pictures but the last two previewed just fine. What happened? Help!
Update:Dr. Sam, I'm certain it was off. I'd just come in--ran inside--after dropping off my daughter's friend. I'd seen the moon and ran to get my camera, change the lens and mount it on my tripod before the sky got too dark. The only thing I can think of is that I started to mount the lens upside down in my haste. I guess that might've screwed it up a little.

Terisu, it's probably coincidence that this problem happened at the time you changed the lens.
When they say dirty contacts, that can also mean that there is corrosion. It doesn't have to be much and it doesn't have to block a signal from, or to the card. From the way you are describing the behavior of the camera, it sounds like a corrosion problem. If you rarely remove the card, that's an even better indicator.
It may not be possible to get those two images off the card, they may not even really exist. Here's a down and dirty suggestion. It sounds like removing and replacing the card cleaned the contacts enough to get the card working again. Carry that forward a little.
Power down the camera and remove and reinsert the card five or six times, or until you get bored. The slight abrassion of doing this will tend to clean the contacts even more. Replace the card, power up the camera and reformat the card.
When the camera is finished reformatting the card, it will check it's integrity. If everything checks out okay, you're good to go. If not, replace the card.
I always carry at least one extra blank formatted card ready to go.
Good luck,
Vance

The more I think about it, everything points to the contacts being the source of the problem.
Your changing the lens couldn't have anything to do with it and you aren't the first Nikon or Canon owner to start putting the lens on upside down. They took care of that in the design.
What seems to have happened is that the contacts controlling writing to the disc weren't making signal contact with the card. I don't know if Nikon handles things the same as Canon, but with the Canon the image you see just after exposure I believe is the one that is in the camera's buffer. Your problem came in getting the image from the buffer to the card. It doesn't take anything more than having one contact dirty to cause problems.
Just removing and replacing cards will keep the contacts clean in both the card and the camera. It's a good idea to turn the camera off (a rule I don't follow) since moisture and electricity tend to do strange things in each others presence. If you live in a humid area that adds more support to it being minor corrosion.
Sorry to answer and run, but I want to get back to CSI: Miami, where they use only Nikon cameras. Maybe they only use them as PROPS, Antoni, but they still use them! I never said they "take pictures" with them.
We all do it... Did you forget to turn the camera off when you changed the lens? They tell you to turn the camera off in the manual, but I forget sometimes. I'm gonna pay one of these days, but I just don't know what will happen... It shorts stuff out.
The Manual also said that the "Card has not been formated for the D70" try reformatting the card.

Dr. Sam they also use Nikon on CSI Vegas, but one season they did used Canon with Canon blacked out.
im wondering about the contacts in the body, use a cotton bud and wipe them (gently like david hasslehoff would), if the bud comes out dirty - theres the problem...also try another card, and turn off when switching lenses - being a D70 i expect its the contacts in the cam
as for you Dr Sam.....they dont use nikons: they are actors, "acting" like they use a camera.......nikon paid for product placement...haha , here we go again.......pieces of peace...fstops here haha,,,,,,maxwell smart code.....gotta run my shoe phone is ringing
why did the Hoff wax off his wonderful "love rug" anyway thats the real question......remember we all used to tune in to baywatch just to watch him run down the beach with his "rug of love" out in the sun..........my shoes ringing again gotta run
