Car companies need to stop thinking about profits for once and start being part of the solution instead of the problem. They need to get completely off of combustion and quit depleting resources to make big huge vehicals which no one can afford. If they made simple commuting vihicels which regular people could afford then they could still make their precious profits. Because they won't change though and it's too late because they sucked every last cent from the people. I think all the car companies deserve to go out of bussiness. We need a complete over haul of our broken down system and fast before none of us can breath and all of our resources are depleted. What do you think we could do to change the minds of the car companies I think we should boycott them all until they get some sensible solutions for us since they created this economic problem they should be the ones to fix it. What do car companies should do to fix the problems they created?

We don't need to do anything as consumers other than use our heads when we purchase new vechicles.Don't buy the gas guzzling behemoths that they try to sell us.Instead buy more affordable, more fuel efficient cars made by foreign manufacturers such as Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, etc.Believe me when I say that the "big three" auto manufacturers GM,Ford, and Chrysler are worried that they may not be in business much longer if they don't play "catch up" with the competition. So lets do our part for the planet and shop smartly and buy the more fuel efficient cars and let the big three die a slow and certain death if they don't get with the program.
I know for a fact that Volkwagen sells a vechicle in Europe that is getting almost 90 miles to the gallon! It's a 1.5 Litre Turbo diesel car.Why don't we have it here in Canada, and the USA?Because the competition can't compete with it and it would be the beginning of the end for the big three if it were allowed in either Canada or United States.
Europe is so far ahead of us in this regard that it is laughable when you look at what is offered here compared to abroad.
Will we ever as consumers learn that we do hold the power to make things change?
A nice question.
But I can't suggest anything because not matter what you try... your idea will NEVER happen not for another 100-1000 years at least. We'll think of something when we've finally hit the rock bottom of the rock bottom.
I think that car companies should make better gas mileage cars as A DEFAULT, not just an extra $50,000 tacked on the bill.
They KNOW how to do it but they'll NEVER do it because then that blows up any money gas companies make and that also destroys the extra car salespeople can make.
It'll never happen anytime but it's a good thought have upon us... the world today is all about money, money, money...
You have a point but your rant isn't fair. First of all, car companies are not the only contributor to global warming or high gas prices. Second of all, you can't just switch from gas to something else overnight. Fuel stations need to be built (if you want hydrogen) and they need to make sure these things work before they just release them. What if they rushed to release an electric car and it's got a flaw in it... you'd end up with another Ford Pinto. And doesn't the consumer have to take some of the blame too? I'm not saying they shouldn't be doing even more than they do but you have to be realistic.
It is not the car companies, it is us! Our demand for whatever we are willing to spend our hard-earned cash on, they will produce. It is supply and demand. It is whatever sells at the moment. If we would down-size on our spending, it would enable them to reduce their production.
How much do we buy, that we actually 'need'? How much do we buy that we could 'really' do without? It is staggering! We don't need 80% of what we spend our money on!
Please, allow me to put this to an analogy, here. It is Thanksgiving Day and the table is set. We see food and we are hungry. We pile on our plates; turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, yams, vegetables, fresh salad, macaroni salad, jello salad, fruit salad, and of course cranberry sauce and dinner rolls. Then there are the deserts. There is pumpkin pie, apple pie (a' la mode) cherry cobbler, mincemeat pie, pecan pie, chocolate pie, banana cream pie, lemon meringue pie, chocolate cake yellow cake with chocolate frostings, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, cheese cake topped with strawberries or rasberries or chocolate, sponge cake, angel food cake, chocolate mousse, tarts and torts and on and on...You only have one tummy and you can only stuff so much in that one tummy at one sitting. We usually 'gorge' ourselves before we finally push ourselves away from the table. We are invariably so stuffed that we are most uncomfortable for at least, the rest of the day. How much is left on our plates that just would not fit into our now, stretched little tummies? How much, left on our plates, of all this food, is thrown away ?
This is us and our economy here! This is just how much we abuse what we have. I think it is pathetic. This is not to say that I am not part of this gluttony. All I am saying is; we have to stop our spending for things we don't absolutely have to have. Somebody has to set the example here. By, some'body'; I mean, we are the "body" of our country. If we want all others to change, we need to 'be' that change, first!
So, how about it, who's in for change? Who is willing to start a movement for the people by the people and to the people of this great country? We can make the difference!!
although I can scarcely "stand-up" for the automobile industry.....
I view them more as part of the problem...or another symptom of a larger problem....
truly there are other sectors of industry that deplete, rape or ruin our natural resources and the earth's homeostasis (balance)...
I fear the true villian is our societie's lifestyle...(it is a frankenstien creation....gone amok)....
instead of living in balance with our environment....giving and getting in mutual benefit..... we (you and I) have carelessly left the earth's needs out of our lifestyle equation....
ie.... we are both typing at a keyboard made out of plastic which is very detrimental to the environment (even "recycled" plastics).... but this is what we want.... this is what we are choosing...
Unfortunately the car companies are victims just as we are. They are held prisoner as well due to oil prices. If they can't sell cars, people loose their jobs, adding to the strain that is already upon us. Put the blame where it belongs; firmly on Bush and his cohorts. :)
vivianna, Stop making gas burning engines and go electric !Stop giving minors drivers liscense. Let them walk or ride bicycles.Bring back all the small town stores so people can walk to the store.
Any of the three..."same ole, same ole"!
