He would need to discuss this with his HR rep. and the claims person for the w.c. policy that his work has in place. They will let him know what his benefits will be under their policy. Some w.c. policy's have a 7 day waiting period for benefits to begin paying the employee, he needs to find out if that is the case.
(Short-term disability coverage is totally different and you can not file for both at the same time. Since it's a w.c. injury then that is where he will receive benefits from)

depends on which state
many states workers comp pays after 7 days but it is retroactive to the first day
some states pay after 3 days but are not retroactive
some start after 5 or 7 days but aren't retroactive.....................

Your husband should contact the HR department and talk to them about both short term disability and workman's compensation claim and how to file.
