You are going to see an occasional ant for awhile after even a thorough extermination job. The exterminator will have targeted the colony and there are bound to be a few that didn't die right away or that were in a different location when the nest was poisoned.
I'm not sure if this is true, mainly because I've never tried it, but my old chemistry teacher loved sharing random facts, and she had given us this article about salt, and it said that ants don't like to walk on salt. It said to sprinkle some salt around any possible entry point and it should stop the ants from entering your house. Like I said, I'm not sure if it really works, but I don't see any harm trying.
It can take several days for ant bait to get rid of the nest. The ants have to take the bait into the nest. Ant bait is good to put our. If the ants do not like sugar, Combat or a bait for protein ants is good. If they do like sugar, Terro or Pic is good to use.
But a bowl of vinegar or suger outside and put ant poison all of it.
