I am not sure if smoothly and relationship belong in the same sentence. In my experience relationships are just messy because you have two people learning how to co-exist with out being completely drowned by the relationship.

Usually when I feel like something is wrong, it is not. That is just my fear speaking. However, there is nothing wrong with being cautious.

Stop letting your friend speak to him you need to do it yourself so that he gets to know you. You should try to meet him soon. Talking and txt only give you a small idea of who a person is. Seeing someone in person tells you the most.

Are you afraid he isn't who he says he is? You need to let time pass so you can get to know him a little better. People might say over electronic communications won't work, but if two of the right kind of people get together, anything will work. Just keep talking to him and let things unfold naturally.

its just weird to have a relationship over electronics. i think you guys need to meet with eachother face to face because if you guys dont do that then this relationship is just not going to go very smoothly and nicely. hope i helped :)
