Also I don't know what it was it wasn't a baby cardinal or a baby blue jay because I looked both up. But it had a black straight beak tan head and body. Orange spots on the tips of it's flight feathers and yellow striped tail feathers. It was abnormally friendly and sat in my hand for a little while. But it seemed a little light for it's size. It was sitting on the ground for fifteen minutes while my three year old was trying to pick it up. So I picked it up and it sat for a while and let it go it flew up in the air to a high limb so I think it was ok, but is it normal behavior for a young bird just to sit for that long?

In California, I had a baby squirrel that wanted to adopt me and my 120 lb Akita. It was a job to convince it to remain in a tree.
I think it thought Grizzly Bear was it's mother. I didn't tell him!
As cruel as my reply may sound. Humans should NEVER touch a "baby bird" or any other baby animal. Mother nature's way of taking care of animals is simple. Let them be. If they are STRONG enough, they survive. If they are WEAK, they die by starvation or being eaten by predators. Either way, it is Nature's way and humans should NOT interfere.
Only the STRONG survive in the wild. There is no Social Security or Medical Insurance to take care of weak, sickly and defective animals. Remember that.
When a human or any other thing touches a "baby" this or that, the scent LEFT will discourage even the MOTHER from coming to the rescue. The fact that it flew up to the branch is good. Next time stay clear and let Nature do it's caring.
I love the wild but have learned to RESPECT and LIVE by their rules. Life is really quite simple. #1 You strong, you live. #2 You WEAK, you die.
We had 2 baby birds sitting next to our fence for a while the other day....they nested in our gutters over the winter and I didn't have the heart to tear it down....I don't think the ones we had knew how to fly yet. My boys wanted to touch them but I told them their Mommies wouldn't feed them if they did....Hopefully they are alright and didn't get eaten by the neighborhood Tom. Ours looked like they were old enough to fly....
I don't know what could have been up with the bird you had though....No I would say that it isn't normal behavior for them to sit that calmly while you held them...
Yes. It is perfectly normal for baby birds to sit that long. And also, Don't forget! It is not used to your home! So...it needs to adapt and adaptation needs time. If you are talking about light, birds have to have hollow bones to fly so thats why they are light. It may also be because of its hungriness. Feed it something that will make it full. It will help. And remember to set the birdie free! Whatever species it is!

It was probably in shock. Ive had alot of birds do this after they fly into a window at our house. You can pick them up and it seems like they are friendly but really they are just in shock. i would put the bird somewhere safe like up in a tree and leave it alone to get over the shock
All baby animals are abnormally friendly, however... You can look up the humane society in your area and call them to find a local bird and rehabilitation center before it dies of dehydration and lack of the proper food.
I caught a baby bird once and it had been kicked out of its nest or it had fallen out of it but once I touched it the mother of the bird NO longer let it in the nest
it probably fell out of its nest so like the others said it probably was in shock. but after you have touched it the mother might not care for it any more, so id watch it, and if it seems that way id advise you to take it to a humane society or zoo or somthing so they can raise and release it.
vivianna, Don"t worry hon it may have just been disoriented for a while.Animals are not much different than people. When they are young they are very trusting. But it flew so it will be alright ! Bless you for your kind heart !
