I can hear a watch tick at five feet away. I can hear the high pitch buzz of a computer monitor, and even the sound of a dog whistle. But when there are other noises it the room and I am trying to focus on one voice I miss what someone is saying is that normal or the sound completely interupts my train of thought have you ever had this happen is it common?

Sure, some of us are more auditory focused. I can't talk to my husband when the computer is blaring or the tv is on. I can, however, hang out in Answers while watching an old episode of Two and a Half Men.
Being auditory focused (or an auditory learner) just means I really need one sound at a time. Only about 4% of the population is like this... so you probably feel like a bit of an oddball. Out of curiousity, do you "hear the words" when you read book? I bet you do.
Don't worry I am the same way!! lol. . I swear I don't hear things or people when they are right next to me but I can hear the smallest quietest noises from far away and such. Its kinda hard to explain but I'm glad there are people like me out there.
Sometimes my family says its "selective hearing" but trust me there is a lot that I rather not hear that I do.
Oh, please tell your doctor this -I remember learning something about this in one of my psych classes, though your situation may be completely normal-It's best to get it checked to be sure, so that you can learn to concentrate.
I forget what the term was, so I won't bother saying it-Just be sure to see a professional as it can be a pain in the rump not to be able to hear something when you want too- What you are describing does sound like a symptom though-where teh noises can be really extreme-if even really low.
yup crack kills
