I'm interested in starting a piranhas tank but i'm not sure if they are legal in illinois. i have looked online but they do not give a specific answer.
Illinois is one of the states that lets you own Piranhas. But only Red Bellied Piranhas. Because they are less aggressive. Black Piranhas are illegal (they are most aggressive) so don't get those. I brought baby RB 's about 10 months ago at a place in Lombard called Topi-Quatics for $4 each. I brought 6 and now im down to 3. So just know that they all might not live in the end. Even when you feed them regular they sometimes get territorial and they will bite or even kill each other. But overall Piranhas are cool fish to have and its fun to watch them grow. Mine are starting to grow their teeth!! Good luck with you Rb piranhas be cause they are LEGAL to own in Illinois so don't listen to those ppl that are saying they are illegal. P.S. that link is the store so you can get directions but call first to make sure they still sell them they also have alot of other exotic fish too.
All species of piranha are illegal in the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii.
To be absolutely sure, check the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Invasive Species List and the US Fish & Wildlife Service List of Invasive Species.
Yes they are legal in Illinois. I saw some at my LFS today. The states that ban them are mainly southern states because they are concerned about them being released into the wild and forming a breeding population.
