I brought my car to a shop and was told I need a new card for my engine. they told me to order the carb for my 400 cubic inch engine so I did, not knowing that I actually have a 440 engine. they installed the carb and made it fit but the car tends to stall out during accerlation. So will having a carburetor from a 400 engine on a 440 engine cause it to stall out during acceleration? or is this a differint problem

I don't know what size of a carb you put on it but a 440 needs a 750 cfm carb on it to run decent, try setting the timing ahead a little and see if that helps.
You may get by the problem with and adjustment to the accelerator pump. Give the pump more volumn and it may mask the problem of the wrong carb. A bigger concern would be the mixture in high end /high demand. Should you be pulling a long grade you might lean out the top end and get into some extreem temp problems in the cylinders. This can melt valves, loosen valve seats, and ping like heck. In short, get the right carb.
I would think that if it fits the intake manifold, it should work.
Try having it adjusted by a mechanic with carb experience.
We used to swap carbs all of the time: a two barrel for a four barrel or 3/2 barrel.
You need to change the jetting.
