Because if they actually had to defend Obama's proposals, associations, track record and statements, there would be nothing worth defending.
Thus, when you have no defense; attack!
It's a classic Liberal trick.

To my misinformed & bigoted friend David above me; discriminating because of age is no different than discriminating because of sex, race or religion. You are a bigot my friend.
-----------------------------
To my friend "tonalc2": your statements as you make them are not ageist or sexist. However, as I'm sure you actually well know, most Obama supporters who comment on McCain's age aren't doing it in the context you have in your answer (your friend David here being case in point).
-------------------------------
To my other misinformed friend "Marq JPAA": No, your choice to support Obama does not make you ageist. Just like my decision to NOT support Obama does not make me racist.
I don't see anywhere where the asker implied that. HOWEVER, a quick glace at election questions about McCain shows a HUGE number of Obama supporters like your friend David here who do indeed make ageist bigotted statements.

Kudos to "D B" for finally presenting an intelligent liberal statement here. Kind of refreshing, honestly!
Being female, sexism is not something I condone. And I couldn't possibly care less how old a candidate is.
I will not be voting for the McCain/Palin based solely on the fact that I do not agree with the majority of their platforms. Shocker - I'm voting on issues not on race, gender, age, religion (real or the one people are trying to claim Obama is). Those things do not concern me. I do not think McCain is a little Bush. I do not care about Palin's glasses or moose hunting. I simply do not agree with their ideas. End of story.
It's just too bad you seem to have gotten caught up in the BS fest that the likes of Rush Limbaugh like to put out there instead of the real issues. It makes me wonder just how informed your vote will be.
Because we don't support your Presidential candidate (who does happen to be in his 70s), and we don't support your Vice-Presidential candidate (who happens to be a woman) means we're "ageist" and "sexist", even if we don't like the things your candidates stand for?
Has it ever occurred to you that we don't support their positions on the ISSUES?
Dumbest.Question.Yet.
Now, I have a question for you:
OK, then: why are McCain's followers such outright racists?

It is not age discrimination to comment on the fact that McCain would be the oldest elected president in history.
It is not sexism to demand that Palin answer questions about her views and experience.

McCain is old. That's not discrimination, that's the truth.
