It just depends on the smell. If it is a sewer smell, i.e. human waste mixed with methane you have a real problem. That being, your trap is dry, probably from leakage. Look under the sink for wet spots or damage to the trap. This will most likely require material in the form of new pipe and trap along with some special tools and a bit of knowledge. If that is the case and you can't fix it yourself easily call a HANDYMAN. This job does NOT require a $150 an hour plumber.
If it just smells sour like a wet towel that is bunched up at the bottom of a clothes hamper you have a sour trap or disposal or both. If the sink is double get two small boxes of baking soda. Pour one in each side and add a bit of water, about 1/2 cup to each. Do this just before bed and then rinse it thoroughly in the morning. If the sink is single do the same thing but you may have to do it twice.
If all else fails, remove the trap and clean it. Another time when a plumber is not needed. If you can't do it yourself any reasonably handy person can help. This won't be pleasant but it should do the trick if the soda fails.
Pack the drain with baking soda, just pour as much from the box directly into the drain from the sink, then pack it in, then slowly pour white vinegar into the drain, continue until drain runs clear. follow this procedure every month or so, to prevent future problems.
have a bathroom sink drain that stinks. I have put vinegar in it and used the steam cleaner using the steam down the drain. Last night I used liquid plumber. It still smells. Phewy when I brush my teeth. Help.
