I'm thinking of my parents who are devout christians and pacifists. I don't believe they would ever kill another person for food. Steal, definitely but I don't think they're capable of just saying "to hell with everyone else, we're going to live."

Absolutely, put anyone, or indeed society under pressure or like you said, a difficult situation then things can turn sour. E.g. riots and protest against new ideas...
