When a cop fails to protect someone, when have they been sued successfully?
If a cop CANNOT be sued successfully for failing to protect civilians, why do somany think that we should rely on police for personal and immediate protection (after a phone call and 10 minute wait of corse).
Update:Who is reading my question? I am asking if historically, police have ever been sued for not protecting someone!

It is difficult to sue the Police for failure to protect. I am not responsible for the actions of others. Furthermore, if I am dispatched on a call and I respond to the best of my ability but the bad guy hurts you while I am in route then once again I can't help you while I am not there.
In the few cases where Police have been successfully sued for failure to protect it usually stems from the Police taking on an unrealistic obligation of security. Such as telling a woman with an abusive husband that the husband will never harm her again, that they will make sure of it. Even in those cases I know of at least one case where the Police have successfully defended themselves from civil liability.
When it all boils down to it the one responsible for harming you is the criminal, not the police.
The police can not be sued for not protecting somebody, it has been ruled on time and again in court. Also, people rely on police for protection because they have no other choice. Many people can not or will not face their attacker and the police are trained to do that and it is their job. It is also illegal in some situations for a person to say, shoot another, when they could have called the police. Lastly, the police are the only ones that have the power of arrest, that is why we rely on them.
To say that an officer "failed to successfully save" someone is not a libel issue unless there were gross negligence on the officers part.
I think your rationale is like saying that if all the popcorn kernels don't successfully pop...you have a lawsuit.
One solution to your problem is talk to your city council or county commission and ask for higher taxes against your wages in order to hire more police officers.
It seems to me your issue wasn't all that "desperate" or else you wouldn't be sitting behind your computer talking about not being protected.
I don't think they can get sued. I wouldn't sue but if I really wanted protection I would hire a bodyguard. The law enforcement, despite some of it's flaws, plays a major role in our society. Without them, we would have utter chaos; look at RoboCop for an example.

Instead of constantly complaining about the Police, why don't you think of a way to FIX the system.
A cop is not there to protect you from your own personal problems. thatis why you sould hire a body guard - they are loyal to you since yo uare their employer. You are not th ecop's emploer, you are only part of the people he meets on his job, just like you meet poeple on your job.
