I am looking at getting into triathlons because I am a talented swimmer and runner but I need a fast bicycle to be able to be competitive. Unfortunately I am a little cash strapped so I need to stay under $600. Any suggestions???
A lot of bikes are going to work well up to 30 km/hr. At speeds greater than that wind resistance makes it very difficult and you will need a much lighter bicycle.
However, a bicycle with thin tires and triathlon bars will get you up to 30 km/hr average. Make sure the bike fits you. Even an expensive bike that doesn't fit will not help you. Go to your local pro shop and size up a Trek FX hybrid, fit it with tri-bars and then find a used one on eBay.
