It happens that I am observing a fast at the moment.
Anyways the month of ramadhan is the 9th month in the lunar calender. When this month starts every muslim who fulfils the requirements to fast must observe it. This includes being an adult in good health etc. It is the a bstenance of food from dawn till sunset and it is for Allah and the muslims believe Allah will give them the reward for it.
But Allah does not want us to abstain from food and drink and the end of the story. We must develop our understanding of the religion and our relation with Allah. Also one must abstain from cursing, fighting and all bad deeds. If one can do that sincerely for a whole month i.e. in the month of ramadhan thenhe can do it for the rest of his life too.All other activities are to be carried out normally, One wakes up before the fajr (that is the morning) prayers and eats and drinks something. Then when the time comes for the maghrib prayer i.e. the sun sets the fast is broken prefarably with a date or water as the Prophet Muhammad did.
Not much. They do it, and at the end of Ramadan they have a party. Young children and sick people are excused from fasting, and it is not a total fast but during certain hours of the day.
