Follicles are the parts of the ovaries where the eggs mature and
are released.
Follicles are fluid filled sacs in your ovaries that contain eggs. Every woman has hundreds of thousands of these. But at the start of every cycle, a few start to grow larger (the average, healthy number is around 22 follicles growing at the start of a cycle). As you get closer to ovulation, one follicle becomes dominant, and grows faster and bigger than the others. When ovulation occurs, the follicle erupts and releases and egg into the fallopian tube, where it might be fertilized by sperm.
Seeing lots of follicles doesn't really mean much. 20 is a high number, but it is the average, but if the number is too high, it can be a sign of trouble. I have PCOS, and I get around 44 follicles at the start of my cycle, because my hormones are out of whack. However, if she says she doesn't think you have PCOS, it means you don't have cysts on your ovaries. Cysts form when the egg fails to release from the follicle, which means an egg isn't released. Which means conception can't occur.
I would just wait to see what your doctor says. Don't hesitate to write down all the questions you have, and ask him or her to answer them one by one. The more you know about what's going on in your body, the better it is. Advocate for yourself.
Good luck! I hope they get you a diagnosis soon.
