hi there
i work for a local council and sometimes we have to deliver recycling boxes to residential homes sometimes as many as 120 adresses and when were given the lists they arent mapped out in a practical route ie you could end up in the same road 4 or 5 times.
is there a program online that i could type these adresses into and it would plan me an efficient route to save me time?
Update:I do actually plan with google maps i type the adresses in for the different areas and plot my own route but its very time consuming just thought i would see if there was an easier way thanks for all your help though.

The skill of being a multi-drop van driver is being able to sit down with a map and figure it out for ourself, just like everyone had to do 10 years ago before sat-navs and GPS etc.
15 minutes going through the paperwork before you leave will save you hours in the day.
If you don't know the area get yourself a good A-Z map and plan your route. before loading.
Sort the deliveries into street order and house number and then with the A-Z plan the best route.
It's the same principle if you're doing 120 deliveries in the same city or 20 deliveries across Europe: Never trust the 'planners'
You sort them as you put them on the van but if the boxes are all the same just put the paperwork in order or mark the list 1,2,3,4,5,6, etc or put a symbol against the ones on the same road like a # or 0 or /
Type in the postcode(s) and sort on an excel spreadsheet.
Or ask if the list can be sorted by postcode before handing over.
There are programs that will do this, but to my knowledge they are not on-line or free, you have to buy them and install them on your own computer - there may now be aps that can be used with smartphones but again you would have to buy.. but you could try this...http://download.cnet.com/Free-Route-Planner-MyRout...
Search for 'route optimisation', there are free trials but most seem to charge, would your boss pay?
