well I am about to get a pup. I have always admired boxers looks but it seems like in arkansas dobermans are much harder to find. This will be my first dog and I'll keep it in an apartment. Keep in mind I have a roomate that has a 1 year old Mini pinscher and he is going to be getting a male doberman soon himself as well as help me raise mineHe will raise his pup and MinPin upstairs, while I raise what I get down stairs.
I am wanting a smart loyal dog that takes orders. Maybe does about 5 tricks. Me and roomate are getting these pups around the same time and I can't have his Dobbie out-learning or out-anythinging my dog, I'm just too competitive. So, considering what I've said which breed would you recommend me for a 1200 square foot apartment? which is typically smarter? less prone to health problems? and is one breed a little more expensive than the other?
How much would training class for a pup cost and how long do they last?
Will it make noise and keep me awake at night

You don't seem to understand much about Dobermans or Boxers. I have experience with both. And I really don't see having two Dobi's or a Dobi and a Boxer in one 1200 Square Foot apartment, with another smaller dog and two adults. It's just not conceivable.
Dobermans, while smart, loyal, and affectionate are also psychotic. They are extremely destructive in their first three years of life. Mine have eaten and broken many expensive things (TVs, shoes, a room of carpet, many set of blinds, three couches). They require constant stimulation and a lot of room to live in. They are very big dogs, some coming to 28" at the withers.
Boxers, are the big babies of the dog world. Some can also be very big making apartment living hard, my aunts is 85lb and isn't fat. They are sweet, loyal and great family dogs, but are rarely very smart.
I don't recommend either dog for you. You need to get a smaller dog, or find a house to live in. Because making the dogs live in the apartment isn't fair to the dogs.
Also how you are going to raise them kind of concerns me. You can't raise these dogs away from each other. They need to for a bond with each other and become a pack otherwise they will fight.
I suggest you look for, not a breed you WANT, but a breed you can have with you current living situation. I know I would love a beautiful red Siberian Husky, but with two rabbits and four cats, that isn't happening.
They are both wonderful dogs full of energy, each dog is different and some boxers are stronger and some dobermans are stronger Any dog can only be trained as well as the person who is training it. Most shelters and rescues have many large dogs mixes and pure who need homes. Why not have a look at pet finder and see if there is one or two you may be interested in? Just type it in and thousands of homeless animals will come up!
im going to be partial... I have a boxer, so i say boxer...
something to know about them.. They need affection, time, and lots of energy. They have a need to be with people. They are very smart and will take orders if they respect you as the one in charge. They can be very bullheaded dogs if you arent stern about there rules as pups. If they get bored-and thats not hard- they will chew your place apart. They are known to have behavioral problems when there arent stimulated enough. So be prepaired to run with your dog daily. I agree with an above comment, there comedians :)
Dobermans are much more serious, gaurd dog types. I have never had one, so i cant say too much about there personalitys but i think that any dog you are considering buying, needs to have a personality match with you. The best dog is the one thats socialized, loved, and fitted for there owners life style.
good luck
I don't know any decent breeder with a clue one that would place a Doberman or a Boxer in this situation as it is wholly unsuitable. Yes, they will make noise and keep you awake all night and will be competitive and will not 'take orders' from you. Both would be prone to health problems unless breed by a decent breeder (which wouldn't let you have one of theirs) and both would be way to expensive for you.
Neither are very good apartment dogs. I can't speak for Boxers because I've never owned one but I do have a Doberman and it is very hard to keep him occupied. Doing 'about 5 tricks' isn't going to cut it. They need exercise and work. Wait until your roommate gets his dobbie, but two big dogs in an apartment doesn't sound like a good idea unless you are willing to take them out A LOT, and not just for walks but to play, train, and work.
And can you clarify what you mean by you'll raise your dog downstairs and he'll raise his upstairs? I'm not sure what you mean by that, but it doesn't sound like a very good idea.
I think a doberman would be too big for an apartment, especially 2 of them, unless you are a runner and can wear him/her out everyday. Petsmart classes are about $100 and are 1 night/week for 8 or so weeks. Once you do one, you can do it for any other dog the rest of your life. MinPins are cool...mine used to use the litter box...that sounds like a good choice there.
I would get a little terrier. Maybe a Jack Russel. They are terribly smart and full of energy. They can do awesome tricks if you train them the right way. Crate train your pup, it's the easiest way to house break. Never use his crate as a punishment. It needs to be his own little den. Yes, it will keep you up at night. It's a puppy!
I have a Boxer LOVE HIM TO DEATH! Boxers are all play all the time they are the natural born comedians of the Dog world.Dobermans are a more serious breed and Excellent for protection so whatever your needs or expectations although no breeds characteristics are set in stone.
yes- it will make noise and keep you awake- having a puppy is like having a new baby
and no dog- takes orders- they learn commands thru trust- trust me I have 2 pits and 2 kids- and thru training I am the alpha and use hand commands to keep all members of my family sage.
Both have heakth issues- dobies are prone to bloat
and boxers are prone to cancer
are you sure that there is enough room for three dogs and two people? all dogs make noise and can keep you up at night
