It's nice to be patriotic and serve for your country, and I respect that.
However, serving doesn't really make you fit to solve the country and the free world's issues.
It doesn't help fix the economy, or immigration, or anything. It doesn't even help with foreign policy (being good at shooting enemy combatants does not make a politician a skilled negotiator).
Nor does it automatically make a person an immediate expert on anything.
Honestly, why should we even care about a politician's military record? Or anyone's military record, for that matter?

It has been useful since this country's inception. As you point out, it does not make sense in every case.
I believe our first president was the General in charge of beating the British. George something or other.
At least as far back as the Roman Empire.
