Regarding a felon owning a hunting rifle & shotgun in Virginia?
I have been told that a felon can own a shotgun or hunting rifle in Virginia, & I cannot find a clear answer with search engines. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Update:I know about owning a black powder rifle, but only if the state doesn't prohibit it. I do not own any guns, aside from airguns, which are legal. I did not know about shotguns though. I will look into it.

A person legally can not own a firearm if they have felony record .If you buy a handgun or long gun from a dealer they have to run a background check on that person if convicted of/under indictment(or information) for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, whether or not sentence was imposed.This includes misdemeanor offenses with a potential term of imprisonment in excess of two years,whether or not the sentence was imposed. It is not true. The only long gun a convicted felon can possess is a black powder rifle or shotgun, neither of which are classified as firearms. Many law enforcement officers including police and probation officers are unaware that even these guns can be possessed by a felon, so in order to be safe, you need to call your local police department. Also, a felon cannot posses a black powder handgun.
The law regarding possessing a firearm by a felon has nothing to do with purchase. It is illegal for a convicted felon to even be around firearms. This means no trips to the gun range.
Based on the 1968 Gun Control Act, a felon any where in the US cannot legally own a file arm.. It is right on the 4473 Form and is a reason for purchase denial when the NCIC check is done.

If you owned a gun prior to being charged with a felon and still have that weapon you are violating federal law. You can't be compelled to disclose this but if you are caught with the weapon you will be seeing prison time.

The ONLY caveat is a formal request for having the felony expunged and this expungement being approved and filed in the court so the records when the NCIC check is done does not show the felony.
some people on here do not know jack concerning the law and black powder guns a felon can own these in most states and even the federal law allows felons to own these particular types of guns they have to be the pre 1800's era with no modifications at all please people do ur research before u start typing up answers cause ur bored thanx
It would help if you had a presidential or gubernatorial pardon. That should get your record expunged.
Oddly enough, though, felons can't be compelled to register their firearms. This is due to a US Supreme Court ruling (Haynes vs. US, 1968) which held that a registration requirement violates the 5th Amendment's protection against self-incrimination.
Some states will allow certain classes of felons to posess firearms.
In some states, felons have to file a motion to get their gun rights back ...

no you can't, your a convicted felon, which as said above, means it's illegal for you to own a firearm in all of the US, your not even allowed to touch, let alone own one.
I don't know how it works in your state about pardons, but I believe you can get one and then you may be allowed to possess firearms, it's costly and I believe it would be worth it..

federal law prohibits a felon from PURCHASING a firearm, however if one is previously owned...I'm not so sure. I believe it is a felony to posses a handgun, and truthfully I would be surprised if it was legal for felons to own firearms. However there are grandfather provisions for most gun laws - so you never know...
You should call the BATF and your local police. The police may be reluctant to tell you, but they can't knowingly lie to you about the legality of it.
