I prefer to drag and drop or copy and paste my folders (documents, pictures, etc) into the ExHDD. That way I know what is being backed up and don't have to leave the ExHHD plugged in.

So what do you do to backup after the first time? Format the drive each time? Drag the previous backup to the recycle bin before starting the new backup?
