It's difficult for me to conceive of someone I know not paying at least something against the debt. I wouldn't sue in court for $500, if the party maintains contact. If you have a note and it's notarized, you can sue for a filing fee in Justice Court. If the party doesn't respond or can't pay, you will get a judgment. You are best to work with a party for small payments, 'cause a judgment is of little value unless it is secured by a property or vechicle or something tangible.

Unless a contract was signed, you cannot take a person to court if they owe you money, because the judge will rule it as a 'gift.'
