I can catch waves easily by paddling I get speed I try to pop up, can't do it quick enough, and the wave rolls and I stand up standing still. I'm used to my 6'10 funboard using my legs. By the way I'm 13 4'10 and 90 lbs, so I'm small. My shortboard is 5'10.
How do I stand up on the shortboard. I did once barely and it wasn't hard to balance. I just find popping up really hard.
Any tips?

It sounds to me as if you aren't actually catching the wave. I've watched big old men catch the wave on short boards and take all the time in the world to "pop up". Once they are up they can rip. What you probably need to do is be better position on the wave so that when you catch the wave you are riding down the face at on angle so that that you have time to pop up before you stall at the bottom.
Another thing you could do is to practice your pop up on an indoboard:

good luck.
Hello Noah,
How ya doing? Riding a short board is harder then a long board. Sounds to me like you are getting the nose of the board too high up. The hardest part of catching a wave is keeping the nose down BUT not ever letting it get under water - cause when the nose goes under you are in for a world of hurting (or a lot of fun depending on how ya look at it). SO what you need to do is keep the nose down as close to the water as possible without letting it go under.
If the nose is too high it is way too hard to catch a wave. anyway read this

Hope it helps but I will say this once again the hardest part of catching waves is getting the nose of the board in the right place - the place is having the nose as close to the water without letting it go under the water. I think the article above explains better then I can what you need to do.
Enjoy Dude - surfing is a life long adventure - so don't get frustrated. You will be catching waves with the short board faster then you can say - I love surfing!
