You're going to want to control your breathing. A properly supported breath comes from abdominal support and not from throat pressure. If your throat hurts after belting, you are doing it incorrectly and incurring damage on your cords.
Sing through your teeth. This will relieve the pressure on your vocal cords and let you belt higher safely.
I'd get a vocal coach if you dont already have one and address this with them. Tehy'll be able to see what you're doing correctly and incorrectly and keep you from hurting yourself. Done improperly, belt singing can really hurt a vocalist.

I belt people until they're singing soprano. Does that count?
Belting isn't necessarily better. Learning to control your breathing is key. Sing from your stomach.
If you have the money for it, get a voice teacher.
