I'm using windows xp. Lately I could no longer use my cd/dvd player. The icon of cd / dvd rom as drive D is no longer there ("My Computer").
Also I could not re-install my windows xp os because there seems to be no cd/dvd rom player installed.

try updating your laptop or bios by refering to your manufactures website. try taking out the dvd drive and then put it back in. refer to your user manual or go to the manufactures website. does your dvd rom open, if so, put a cd in it and then restart the computer and see if it reads the drive. or just restart the pc. if that does not work, go into your bios options, do this by rebooting and when your manufactures logo shows up press escape immediately. then go to your put order, usually its in the boot options and put cd or dvd rom first before floppy disk and hard drive. try and see if that works. if those do not work, contact your manufacture and see what they tell you, you probably will have to send in the laptop.
pass to the HP web site and spot in case you are able to receive a driving force on your CD/DVD reader. you will possibly desire to be waiting to try this online in only a jiffy. they'll ask on your laptop specs. i might do a diagnostic attempt on your laptop, too. Do you have secure practices utility put in to maintain viruses out?
I would go the manufacturers site.. most of them have easy access drivers on the site
