I just came from the vet's office and it doesn't look good. Pending lab tests, I think my cat is dying. I don't believe in prolonging a suffering life so if he's ill I want to be able to put him down. How do you handle this? This would be my first time. I love my little fluff so much!

Wait until you think the cat is suffering - it's usually pretty apparent. Putting them down is always hard, but you have to remind yourself that they're going to die anyways and you're making it easier on them by preventing them from suffering. Last month I had to put my cat down. We were told in July that she only had 2 weeks to live and she actually made it 2 more months before she started suffering and we made the decision to put her down. So wait! Get the most out of your time with your cat as you can. Take pictures, feed him his favorite treats and foods, and give him so much love.
Before you decide to put him down, be sure that he is in need of this. Hopefully, his condition will be something that is treatable and he will live to be a healthy-ish old man.
If you know for sure that there is no hope of any type of good quality life, then that is the time to make the decision to help him pass. (Wipe tears here.) Saying good bye is the most difficult part of pet ownership. The only comfort at first is knowing that you prevented suffering. After the burial, the best way to grieve is to adopt another cat, young or old. The new cat will help you more than you realize. Caring for and loving the new cat will provide an enormous amount of comfort to you. Crying into the new cat's fur is a soft wonderful way to grieve. :*) It has helped me many times over the many years of my life.
Best wishes.
Having a pet put to sleep is always hard, but you have to remind yourself that we are lucky we can choose to end a pets suffering before it gets worse. I have had oen dog put down, and the vet was very reassuring by saying that the euthanasia is quick and painless, so it will not be suffering as it dies unlike what it could have been if left.
God bless, and much respect for giving your pet a good life :)
it is totally traditional to be dissatisfied over the lack of whatever as certain as an animal, simply recognize that Smokie's in a higher position and that she may not have got to undergo anymore. a few individuals do not take the our bodies house due to the fact it is simply to unhappy and devestating that is totally adequate, the problem would had been rushed however the deficient matters was once on it is approach out, generally it is higher to finish it like that otherthan looking the animal undergo. simply take into account that Smokie was once your cat and no one can difference the way you felt approximately her.
There's really no way to make it easier. :( just realize you'll be doing the right thing because making fluff suffer would be bad for the cat and you. Realize what a great life you gave him. Good luck!
It's hard but when i finally took the decision and it was really mine because he was mine all i had to do was look him in the eyes and he told me to help him please. I knew there was northing else i could do. there was no cure either. we had tried everything in medication and it was just him time to pass on. I am not going to pretend it's easy. I was gorging my eyes out for a week but i knew deep in my heart that if i had left him alive it would have only worse and he may have died worse than what he did. At least i know all hes did is fall asleep this way
