my new cat is great, but she starts to hiss and growl for no apparent reason when i am petting her or even just walking past her. any ideas how to calm her down. she is fixed.
She is feeling anxious and is warning you that she doesn't like you touching her. I don't know where you got her from, but it could be that she has not been around humans alot or she as been hurt by people.
At this point you need to work with her alot to build trust.
Be patient and don't look at her in the eyes. While sitting have some treats in your hand and if she comes to you don't look at her but hand her a treat. If she starts the growling withhold the treat and ignore her still not looking at her.
Include a box of toys and introduce 30 min of daily playtime. After put the toys back in the box and out of her reach till the next day.
Break her in slowly and just be patient.
Our cat hated us to touch her and cleaned her fur wherever we touched. I kept touching her till she got tired of cleaning all the time.
Another thing is when she grows accustom to you and rejects others in the house. Have some material with your scent on it and have them wipe their legs with it and feet.
Is your new cat still a kitten or is she older? I took in an older cat who was abused....she would scratch, hiss, and growl if you would even sit by her. It seems kinda mean, but I just ignored her. I stopped trying to pet her and acted like she wasn't there. I didn't talk to her or anything. I gave her a little time to adjust to the new surroundings. We also had another cat at the time so I just kept going about my business as usual and then after a couple weeks, she started coming by me. I would pet her just for a minute and then stop and move away. After awhile I would start petting her for a little longer. Now she is doing good and she never growls or hisses at me. She sleeps on my pillow every night and I can't imagine her ever being mean again. Good luck!
stop petting her anytime she indicates in any way that she doesn't like it...some cats get over stimulated at some point in being petted and they indicate that you need to stop. When this happens also put her down, and don't pay anymore attention to her unless she come to you and meows, rubs against you, etc...then briefly pet her again. It's not a good idea to ever try to keep a cat with you if she wants to get down or not be held. In cases like this...cats have to have their way and each cat is different.
If she hisses or growls at you when you are walking by yell "NO!" ...you have two word to use consistently from now on with kitty...a loud "No" followed by not attention at all except more "No"s if needed..."No"s are for stuff she shouldn't do....
Use a sweet sounding "good girl" with a reward of a pet or a little treat, or a pick up and kiss ...whatever you figure out she likes.
Not that I think you would...but don't lay hands on her except to pet her or reward her while saying "good girl" ("good girl" can of course be any one or two words you choose...it's the tone and when you use it that matters)
The other word is her name ....if she comes when you call her name...say "good girl", short pet, and one treat if available.
If you hear her meow, don't stop what you are doing and go see what is up...unless it sounds very distressed and different than it normally is...always call her to you...don't let her call you to her. She needs to figure out that you aren't her servant ...if she thinks your a push over ..she'll be more inclined to growl, hiss, and even scratch and bit a little....she'll bully you basically...
Not to worry though, she will adjust in time ..and you guys will get to know and love each other.
You detrimental ingredient! i've got been there too! dangle in there, this to shall bypass. i'm assuming all and sundry has already been spayed or neutered, which potential in simple terms the cats of direction:) if that's the case then you certainly're in simple terms dealing with an effortless case of overpopulation. Nature's Miracle and/or straight forward answer are a thank you to bypass. do no longer use the rest to bathe the peed on stuff. it may desire to "set" the stain. The manufacturers I used have enzymes that ruin down/digest the waste substances so the animal won't bypass decrease back to that spot. as quickly as you have dealt with each and every grimy floor interior the living house. It acts to calm them down sufficient to end peeing on each and every thing, and to end harassing one yet another too. you have have been given to attack this ingredient from dissimilar angles or you're no longer gonna win. in case you do no longer something, the peeing could end some months when you have moved right into a sparkling place. yet then they could have began an entire new cycle of marking at your new living house. Nip it interior the bud now. I wish you the final of success.
Take her to the vet. maybe there is something wrong. Maybe all she needs is time to adjust to her new surroundings. Or maybe she just wants more certain attention that she is not getting. Check everything around her, maybe there is something scaring her, or maybe she is hurt. If everything is fine, then she is probably just getting used to her new surroundings.
well if she's new to the house or you, maybe she doesn't know what's going on and is scared and's afraid something will happen to him. or if she's not new maybe she's protecting something

it might be some kind of scent or experience.
and baths don't mask any smell to a cats nose
well if she's new to the house or you, maybe she doesn't know what's going on and is scared and's afraid something will happen to him. or if she's not new maybe she's protecting something
go buy a play toy and play with it. it is prob just getting used to its surroundings, it seems normal.
I 'hear' that putting sticky tape on their paws creates wholesome afternoon fun...oh, sorry, to STOP them freaking out.....not sure, lol
