Have you ever had a pet that just wasn't friendly, even to you?

Growing up, we had a toy poodle. He was nice for about a year. After that, his behavioral issues came through. He would wag excitedly and come up to people, only to bite them when they started petting him. He bit many people through the skin (including family members other than my older sister), bared his teeth regulary (especially at night), and urinated everywhere, regardless of training.

I honestly believe that he was mentally ill and that there was little to do to help him (this was 25 years ago).

Have you ever had an abnormally difficult pet?

Update:

Bill--I'm definitely not talking about a "rumbling" cat. Our cat likes to kitty-smack us once in a while or give little bites after being pet for a while. I don't consider him unfriendly or mean. He just needs attention sometimes, but not too much. When happy, which is fairly often too, he is one of the loudest purrers I have ever heard.
