I bought my guinea pigs rabbit food by pure mistakes . It says it vitamin c but what I want to know is can they eat it? Ecotrition ballenced by nature is its name. Help please.
Feeding him rabbit food will not hurt him,but you will definitely have to supplement his vitamin C:
spinach, broccoli, leafy greens, orange wedges are all high in vitamin C.
Guinea pig food is specially made to boost his vitamins,as guinea pigs are the only animal that doesn't produce his own vitamin C.And lack of this cause easily cause Rickets.Just be sure to grab the correct food next time you're at the pet shop.
It's fine to feed it to them, but if you can exchange it, do. I have a bunny and guinea pigs and sometimes they eat each other's food. No one's gotten sick. They are different animals though and do need different nutrients. If you've opened it, you could probably buy some piggy food and mix them together and be alright. Make sure your pigs are getting plenty of fresh veggies though. (Not too much, but they love some fresh veggies here and there. Oranges, strawberries and apples are loved as well. Again, moderation.) Water on hand at all times, etc. Vitamin C is important to a guinea pig. If they don't get enough, they're at risk for scurvy, not rickets. ^^; (But they'd have to go a long time without vitamin c.)
You should be fine. Just get some guinea pig food as soon as you can.
Edit: I've heard that liquid vitamin supplements aren't very safe for piggies. The best way to get them all their nutrients is to supplement with fruits and veggies. Also, your body and a guinea pig's body will better absorb vitamins and minerals from their natural source.
Enough, but not too much. It;s okay to have a plump guinea pig, but overfeeding can kill them. I'd give you guinea pig one handful of dry guinea pig food every day as the main food, and make sure that they have a constant supply of both hay and fresh water. Also, guinea pigs need a lot of vitamin C, go fruit and veg is important. Every other day or so, give them a small helping of either orange, apple or carrot to keep them from getting scurvy problems. Hope I helped.
If you haven't opened the bag, take it back and change it.
Check the ingredients. If it has anti-coccidiosis treatment, do not give it to your guinea pig as this is bad for them (but a health boost for rabbits).
Even if it says vitamin C, there won't be enough for a guinea pig, as rabbits can make their own from their diet.
So, I would recommend taking it back and changing it, or finding a friend or neighbour who has a rabbit and letting them have it (maybe they would make a contribution to the cost).
It won't hurt him but even packaged guinea pig food does not contain adequate amounts of vitamin C. Guinea pigs should ALWAYS be supplemented with vitamin C. I use the oral liquid...you can get it at any pharmacy. They need 10mg per day. This can be given with a dropper or syringe...they love the orange flavoring. At first you have to hold them and put it in their mouths but after a few times they will grab the syringe from you!
It is known to be toxic to guinea pigs because it has antibiotics strictly for rabbits that can end up killing your guinea pig. There is no such thing as "Guinea Pig & Rabbit Food" as they have completely different diet and dry food needs.
I wouldn't feed it to your guinea pigs. It could cause damage and make them sick. I would return the bag if you haven't opened it and get a proper pellet variety for guinea pigs. Kaytee is a excellent brand for this.
Yes they can eat it, but I would recommend getting the proper stuff for guinea pigs and mixing it atleast. Or for the time being, buying them supplements, which dont cost much - they are treats. As long as it's not long term, they will be fine, but you should try to mix it atleast.
I wouldn't waste the bag, buy the right food and mix it. The food will not harm them but its missing what they need.If you fed them that on a regular basis they would perish.

No, guinea pigs can not get the nutrition form rabbit food they need, i made that mistake once and killed a guinea pig before the bag was gone.

I agree with mixing it. do not believe the one who said it was toxic. It is not--just not the right food for long term. They need their vitamin C.
