So I have been battling this flea problem for about a month now. I've done my research and read other yahoo answers. I am allergic to these little pests and have had to resort to sleeping in the back of my truck. I have sprayed, tried home remedies, and I've given my dog flea bathes and hundreds came off him but I leave him outside which people say not to do...just need an experienced and clear answer...first time ever having a flea problem...

1) Get something like Trifexis from your Vet. This kills fleas, prevents heartworm disease and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections. Trifexis will not illiminate adult fleas but it will kill off the larvae and eggs preventing more fleas.
2) Treat your home. Flea Bomb everywhere in your home.
3) Spray your yard with something like this: http://www.1800petmeds.com/Virbac+Yard+Spray-prod6... or http://www.lowes.com/pd_188467-316-HG-95830_0__?pr...
Before spraying insecticides in the yard, prepare the area to help them reach the fleas. Mow the grass and remove organic debris where fleas can hide. Focus on flower beds, under bushes and areas that your pets frequent.
4) Wash your dog with a flea bath and possibly treat with a flea treatment to kill adult fleas
Yes this seams like a lot of steps but if you are allergic to fleas yourself you will want to be as thorough as possible. If your dog isnt on heartworm prevention this will cover that as well.
You need to consult a vet get onto something like frontline. Then a pest controller using termidor would give you at least a 3 month warranty. I would charge around $200 for a standard house and yard. The trick is targeting sandy and barren areas. The frontline and termidor are brilliant for ongoing control, very insect specific and safer than anything that you would use. The key thing is to BREAK THE CYCLE as the eggs can hatch a month afterwards, and you would be wasting money with dyi pest control. Flea bombs are crap. Things like tea tree oil are natural remedies but ironically way way toxic as compared to fipronil the active ingredient in frontline and termidor.
I have had a flea problem before and here's what I would do if I were you. Go to walmart and for like $20-$25 you can buy their brand of flea drops for your dog(PetArmor) it really works. First, give your dog a flea bath (Original Dawn and original Palmolive dish soap is what I use to kill fleas). Then after the dog is dry apply the flea treatment. After that get some borax and sprinkle it all over your carpet, upholstery, beds whatever and let it sit for aprox. 24hrs. then vacuum up. Borax kills any live fleas it touches. I hope this helps. Fleas are such a nuisance!
Your dog will continue to be flea infested until you put him on a good quality flea preventative.
You should also treat this dog for tapeworm. All dogs with fleas have tapeworm from ingesting fleas when they bite the itch.
