I started playing League of legends about a week ago, I understand the game and all but I'm just trying to figure out the best character to begin with. So one of my guy friends sent me a website with the recommended builds for each character, but he wont actually tell me a decent character to try out.
The characters I've tried have been like Ashe, and Diana and a few others I cant remember at the moment.
So what's your recommended character to start out with?

Singed, just run around with poison juice on..that really grinds people gears!
A tank type champion would be the most forgiving for a new player, since they generally have much higher health and resistances compared to the other "squishy" champs. Any type of champ that does not require a complicated chain of ability combos along with their passive or numerous skill shots to be effective, are more or less new player friendly.
Alistar is fairly simple. He has two forms of CC or "crowd control" meaning abilites that slow, stun, or reposition. He is tough, has good sustain with an ability that heals himself and anyone else around him, and about the ultimate tank "ultimate" ability that reduces incoming damage by 80% at lvl 3, and no skill shots. Taric is relatively simple and is an excellent tanky support without any skill shots. Nunu is also fairly simple with no skill shots. Nasus is one of my favorite champs, but he usually needs to be solo top or jungle and is very heavily reliant upon farm (last hitting minions and monsters) throughout the game to be really effective - his Q skill increases permanently in damage for each thing he kills, with no cap, and thus deals a boatload of damage towards end game if he farmed well. If you prefer ranged champs, it's hard to beat Teemo for simplicity. Max his E ability and kite the enemy to death, that's about all there is to him. If you are not good at kiting, or hit and run attacks, then you might not like him as he is weak health-wise and dies very quickly if caught in the open. Ryze is a pretty good starter AP champ or mage, as he has all targeted abilities. But like Teemo he is pretty squishy and must keep his distance as best as possible or will die quickly.
Try a few of the 450 IP champs - they are generally meant for beginners and have skill sets that are not too complicated. Good luck and have fun.

Xin zhao - tanky with decent dps
Master Yi - good on how to learn to play "AD carry" and he can get out of any situation
Volibear - OP sustain very forgiving for "noob" moves
