Hey, Ree - Nick and SA both have great answers. Just to add, the standard dose of azithromycin (Zithromax) for treatment of Chlamydia is a single one-gram dose (250mg tab x4). The treatment standard also used to include Rocephin (ceftriaxone) 250mg IM (injection) for treatment of Gonorrhea at the same time, since studies had shown that, if a person was infected with either Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhea, the chances of co-infection with the other bacteria were very high. However, according to Sanford's Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy (2005 ed.), the treatment for Chlamydia in N. Carolina was with one of the tetracycline-family drugs due to the presence of a drug-resistant strain of Chlamydia. I realize the treatment guidelines have changed since then, now more due to a fluoroquinolone (drugs like Cipro and Levaquin) - resistant strain of Neisseria gonorrhea. The symptoms of chlamydia and gonorrhea may still last up to 7 days after treatment. That's why it's really important to not engage in sexual activity during that time, AND until you're re-tested. Quite often people get infected with two or three different bacteria and/or viruses at the same time.
