So this test is tomorrow and there are 2 things I don't understand.
1: How do you do those problems that ask things like, "Out of all 850 students, 400 get straight A's. What percent of students get straight A's?"
2: How do you do those problems that ask, "36 is 20% of what number?"
i really need to know soon, so please answer ASAP.
Thanks

Hi Simon :
try my never fail at percent formula :
Part of something (P) divided by The Total of something(T) times 100 equals the percent(x%) or
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
for #1 :
Given :
"Out of all 850 students, 400 get straight A's. What percent of students get straight A's?"
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
T = 850
P = 400
solve for x%
Step 1 :
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
400/850 * 100 = x% -Replacing P and T with 400 , and 850
0.470588235294 * 100 = x% - division of 400 by 850 ( rounded to 12 decimal places )
47.0588235294 = x%
so your answer is 47% of students get straight A's
Number 2 :
Given :
"36 is 20% of what number?"
solve for the total number ( T)
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
P = 36
x% = 20
T =?
Step 1:
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
36/T *100 = 20 - replacing P,x%
36/T *100 * 1/100 = 20* 1/100 - timing both sides with 1/100 to remove the 100 from the equation
36/ T = 20/100 - Multiplication
36 / T = 1/5 - Reducing the fraction down to lowest common fraction
T * 36/T = 1/5* T - timing both sides with T to remove the 1/T from the equation
36 = T/5 - Multiplication
5* 36 = T/5 * 5 - timing both sides with 5 to slove for T
180 = T - Multiplication
so 36 of the number 180 is 20 %
Proof or check
P/T* 100 = x% - the never fail at percent formula
36/180 *100 = 20 - replacing P,T,x% with 36,180, 20
.20 * 100 = 20 - Division of 36 by 180
20 = 20 - Multiplication of .2 with 100
so it checks and equals
I hope this helps
What grade are you in?
Anyway, for problems like #2 I usually find 10%.
10%=18.
10%x10%=100%
So...18x10=180.
For #1 I would find 1% of total (850)
1% of 850 is 8.5
Then I'd find how many times 1% goes into the other # (400)
400/8.5=47.0588235.....
So it's approximately 47%
Hopefully I helped and didn't confuse you more! Good luck on the test!
1. 400/850 then multiply by 100
2. 100/20 then multiply by 36
1) Divide the number of students that get straight A's by the total number of students, then multiply by 100.
2) 100% / 20% = 5, so multiply 36 by 5 to get 180.
