i had 2 of this type bt 1 died so i wanted to buy more so can i keep them together also give me names of cichlid whch i can keep with them and whch r mouthbrooding
Number you can keep together would depend entirely on tank size.... with any cichlid from anywhere.
They are "mbuna" from Lake Malawi and are one of the most common types kept in African Rift Lake "community tanks".... so basically any other mbuna can be kept with them with enough space and proper decor. You would definitely keep more than two of this species if keeping it in this situation, unless only a single male in a small tank (still at least a 20gL).
Not knowing your tank size, all I can do is steer you toward "tried and true" combos of species for various tank sizes.... you shouldn't consider anything under the 29g recommendation...
Also, these fish do best in a pH of 7.6 up to 8.0 in HARD water... so decorate with a buffering substrate and decor like crushed coral/shell and limestone rock (lace, holey, etc.) to help you maintain this without chemicals and worry. Some people have suitable water right out of the tap for this (alkaline and hard).
It all depends on how big you tank is and if you want African or New World (North/South America) cichlid. I have 2 Parrot cichlids, and 1 Oscar in the same tank and 1 Oscar and a parrot in another and 1 Jack Dempsey and a Parrot. The more room the better, cichlids are mostly territorial so as long as you have the room you can have more than one. But don't mix african with new world.
YES. you can for sure, but they are very territorial so you have to make sure they have their own personal areas in the tank. they like to hide between rocks or in cave like areas, its also good to have some floating plants because cichlids like to stay toward the bottom of the tank and be hidden.. so it will make them feel more protected, that way you will get to see your fishies more (:
my sister has 9 cichlids in one tank and they have actually started breading!
